Fundraising in Honor of Flag Day

Come on, wave your fundraising flag on June 14 in celebration of Flag Day, a patriotic U.S. holiday that honors the stars and stripes. On this historic day, U.S. citizens are encouraged to proudly display the American flag.

Flag Day was established by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Many communities throughout the country celebrated in their own ways, but it wasn’t recognized as a national holiday until 1949 when it was established as such by an Act of Congress. Today, Flag Day is celebrated each year on June 14, to pay tribute to the most recognizable symbol of the country and its history.

Some great ways to raise money on Flag Day include:

Sell small American flags for people to display in front of their homes. You can also sell flags with a special attachment to be displayed on car windows, as well as flag magnets, bumper stickers, or even T-shirts. Go door to door in neighborhoods, or set up a booth at another event prior to Flag Day to sell the flags. Be sure to include a small card with instructions on how to properly display the flag.

Host a silent auction and ask for donated items from the community, such as gift certificates for popular services, products, and restaurants in your community. You’ll raffle off the items to a lucky winner and keep the bid money for your fundraising pot.

If your charity organization supports a school or library, sponsor an event to raise money for educational books about U.S. history. You can purchase patriotic books directly from The National Flag Day Foundation. Two great options are: "The American Spirit in the New Millennium" by Ronald B. Morgan, and "The Real B. J. Cigrand: The Father of Flag Day" by James Brown. All proceeds go to keeping Flag Day alive and well in the United States.

Organize a small school or church parade in honor of Flag Day and collect donations along the parade route.

Host a ceremonial raising of the flag at your school or business. Get word out to the community, and ask attendees to bring a small donation to support your cause.

Hold a recital at your school or church, and have youth members put on a short play portraying an event in U.S. History such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence, or the creation of the American flag. Attendees can be asked to donate a small fee for their seats.
